Amy Winehouse family fear she was killed by giving up alcohol Body 'couldn't take withdrawal'

AMY Winehouse's family are convinced she was killed by QUITTING booze, The Sun can reveal.
They believe the singer's decision to lay off alcohol completely for three weeks was a lethal "shock" for her tiny body.

The revelations came as Mitch showed his gratitude to fans standing outside her London home today by handing out her clothes, saying: "This is what she would have wanted."

Family sources say Amy died after ignoring her doctor's advice to cut down on her heavy drinking gradually.

And the tragic star's loved ones believe she was killed by a seizure because her tiny 4ft 11in frame could not cope with such a dramatic withdrawal.

A source close to Amy's family said: "Abstinence gave her body such a fright they thought it was eventually the cause of her death."

The Rehab singer, found dead on Saturday aged 27, fell off the wagon three days earlier, sinking gin and Red Bull mixes at the iTunes festival at the Roundhouse in Camden, North London.

But in his eulogy at her funeral on Tuesday, her cabbie father Mitch dismissed reports she went on a 72-hour bender.

Tribute
Revealing more details of the dad's tribute, the family source said: "He wanted everyone to know that he, her boyfriend and her manager believed it was actually the complete opposite.

"He said doctors had told Amy to gradually reduce her intake of alcohol and to avoid bingeing at all costs. Amy told him she couldn't do that. It was all or nothing and she gave up completely.

"Mitch said the shock of giving up, after everything she had been through over a bad few years, was just too much for her to take."

The cause of Amy's death will not be known for weeks, when toxicology test results come through. But last night Sun Doctor Carol Cooper said the booze-quitting theory was feasible.

She added: "The heaviest drinkers have a particularly severe form of alcohol withdrawal called delirium tremens, or DTs.

"They may fall into a stupor and sleep it off, or lapse into a coma - or have dangerous seizures."

Amy's mum Janis, 56, and film director boyfriend Reg Traviss, 35, saw her the day before she died - and were sure she had not been drinking. Her doctor gave her a clean bill of health the same day.

Amy appeared coherent when she arrived at the iTunes festival, where her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield, 15, was the support act for The Wanted.

"But an onlooker claimed she downed "gallons" of gin and Red Bull and "drank the bar dry".

The witness added: "Amy was behaving really erratically but that was nothing out of the ordinary for her."

Red Bull is an energy drink crammed with caffeine, a stimulant that can make the heart race.

Amy's family and close friends continued to mourn her last night at a Jewish shiva gathering in Southgate, North London.

Today heartbroken Mitch emerged from Amy's home in Camden, North London, and handed out some of her flowers and clothes to loyal fans.

He told them: "These are Amy's T-shirts, this is what she would have wanted, for her fans to have her clothes."

As he got into a cab with Reg, he picked up a plaque made by a fan and took it with him. It simply said: "RIP. Never forgotten."

As he left the house, he added: "God bless Amy Winehouse."

Marcella Wright, 17, from Ireland, was given a white vest top.

She said: "It feels amazing to have been given one of her tops. She was an idol for me, an incredible singer and song writer."

Brigitte Pividal, 52, from Camden, got a red top.

She added: "I have been coming here every day since she died and I didn't expect this.

"I will cherish this for the rest of my life."

Meanwhile people close to Amy claim she has left behind a treasure trove of unreleased music - but no decision has been made about what to do with it.

A host of her best-known songs are storming back up the charts.

Figures released yesterday showed Back To Black at No5, with Rehab, Tears Dry On Their Own and Love Is A Losing Game at numbers 22, 24 and 26. You Know I'm No Good was at No33 with Valerie at No35.

AMY pulls a fan up close to her in what is believed to be the last snap of the tragic singer.

She seemed confused outside Camden's Roundhouse, where she jumped on stage to join goddaughter Dionne Bromfield. Thrilled fan Hannah Hardman, 16, said Amy was "approachable and sweet".

DRUNKEN yobs "paying tribute" to Amy have been causing havoc outside her house.

One neighbour said: "People have been getting drunk on the square. If a fight broke out who knows what could happen?"

A member of Amy's security team added: "Things got a bit rowdy. People were blaring music out and drinking in the street."

Cops lined up to keep fans away from the house in Camden, North London. Items left as a shrine outside are to be cleared.

If this is the case then many people should be ashamed of themselves for calling her out so readily on a two-bit and self-righteous moral highground. It's very saddening and ironic that withdrawal could have (and maybe even most likely) killed her. I don't think many people understand how bad withdrawal from medication, drugs or alcohol can be if you've taken it for a long time or are addicted - it's hell. It wrecks your body and mind, and can indeed kill you.

Withdrawal from alchohol without medical supervision CAN KILL!!!
I can't help but wonder where poor Amy's medical supervision was??? I not trying to lay blame at anyone but I feel the best thing for her would have been sectioning and a medicaly supervised withdrawall programm compleate with withdawal medication!
If this had happened, Amy would still be with us today!!

What an absolute joke! I sympathise with the family...but what they are saying is the equivalent of drinking 20 pints on a night out, then blaming feeling sick the next morning on a dodgy kebab!

Of course bad withdrawal can kill you. A few months back I gave up drinking,doing cold turkey. Next thing I knew I was in hospital with drips in arms, thank god I was with a friend when seizures started. I later weaned myself to very little then went to rehab for five weeks. I have been home for two weeks now and feel great

And the drugs she was seen buying the night before??? Think daddy trying to maintain some of his daughters dignity. Too late.

ive been where you are. the stopping is the easy part. staying dry is the real battle!.goog luck.

The Same happend to my late husband . he came of the drink and had fits . he had a massive heart attack and died .

She was drinking "Gallons of Gin and Red Bull" 3 days earlier. That doesn't sound like withdrawal.
Red Bull in large quantities is dangerous, and the drink is banned in some countries due to high levels of Caffeine and Taurine which have been linked to deaths.

any doctor worth his salt would not allow an alcoholic to go completely dry without putting them somewhere safe with medical supervision and drugs to help stop fits i know from my own experience, they dont do it with homeless people so i dont think they would do it with a celeb who makes a record company millions

I am sorry but it would have been the years of substance abuse that probably killed her and how can these so called fans thinking getting drunk and causing havoc outside her house be called paying their respects, well i suppose this is what she has instilled in her fans by her own way of life.

I posted parts of this comment yesterday. Hope it gets on today. Some people are saying "I gave up just like that after X amount of years heavy drinking & im ok" They are the lucky ones. Giving up is easy .Staying off it is the hard part. I know all too well about the withdrawal effects from alcohol, or the DTs the shakes, the sweats the hallucinations & worst of all, the fits, A heavy drinker who decides to go "cold turkey" & just stop without any sort of medication runs a serious risk of having a seizure which can, in some cases, be fatal, especially if they are alone. A fit can come on at any time, without warning. So to be alone when this happens can be deadly. If your in the bath or smoking a cigarette say, you could drowned or burn to death. Lying in bed, you could "swallow" your own tongue or choke on your own vomit. So many terrible ways to die from doing what you think at the time, is a good thing to do. The best way for a heavy drinker to quit is to slowly reduce their alcohol intake over a period of time. Otherwise they need to be in some kind of rehab clinic, monitored closely & on plenty of medication.

Nobody knows what she died from,i think people won't believe it if is as her dad said that her body couldn't take it anymore.While people are being mean about someone dying think it could be a family member how would you feel ?... RIP Amy

if she was withdrawing under the doctor then they would have had her medicated to reduce the withdrawal effect, if she drank the amount they are making out she would've been having seizures after a few hours of not drinking

yip, happens...have a family member who went of the drink after bein a hard alco - blackouts, all salts stripped from body - the DT's can be worse than the disease

it is actually true, the shock to the system of such sudden withdrawal can kill, that is why it needs to be monitored so closely. I have a friend who almost died exactly the same way, still is an alcoholic (there is no cure, once an alcoholic always an alcoholic, you just must abstain for life), only thru swift intervention was he saved.

I think it's best to wait for the toxicology report , before giving credence to any stories that may have come about with regard to what Amy did or did not do.

She was constantly judged by nobodies when she was alive, chased all around London by people with cameras trying to catch the worst photo of her... And even after she passes away, the same nobodies are still judging her. Just leave it alone now. RIP Amy.

I did learn about this on a substance abuse course at college ... but i'm not sure how her family are qualified to say how she died ??

Wasn't really a fan off Amy's but liked her big hits like rehab and back to black but since her death I've heard a lot of her music and sad too say only now realised what a talent she was, her music is brillant and now understand what a lose her fans feel and gutted will never hear anymore from her. Such a shame for her family, friends and fans as she seemed to be about the only "popstar" that was actually real,pity she was or she might still be here. And as for the ghouls making negative comments you can't compare deaths of people and say her life was no more important than anybody else at the end of the day she was human and did not deserve to die at that young age regardless of what she did or didn't do

Contrary to what we all think about how Amy died, let us all remember that she was a daughter, a sister an aunt and a friend, she deserves our respect. These people deserve our sympathy and sincere condolences, mine they have.
I have had many an argument with my son over people who take drugs, he thinks they should all be left to do what Amy done, but I being a Christian say we are all Gods' children, he created us as we are and we all seek approval from others. Maybe we look in all the wrong places for that approval, but we make our own destiny rightly or wrongly. I hope Amy is now resting peacefully and her demons have left her to get on with it.

What you say actually makes a lot of sense!!

I see everyone slatting Amy for her life style which i think is wrong we all have choices in this world she choose hers!!
Alcohol takes more lives every year than any other drug it beats even accidents on taking lives but yet go look around your high streets of the UK !! tell me you dont see this being sold over the counter.....
The Government of the last Government made it so that everyone can buy alcohol over the counter !! as the Pubs are closing which at least had some control over what was being sold and to who it was being sold too!!
Let me tell you why alcohol is still being sold over the counter !!
The big corporate companies Tesco, Sainsburys, and companies like cash and carry started the problem with selling alcohol at cheap prices with cash and carry supplying the corner shops at low prices !! but the public houses have had to put up their prices which has in turn forced people to buy at supermarkets and corner shops they buy more coz it is cheaper than public houses !! |When i was a boy yes there were alcoholics but no where near the amount now !! It all started with Labour everything started with labour !!
If we really care about our children then we need to be heard we need to march on parliment tell them we want our Public houses back and we want prices of alcohol in corners shops and supermarkets the same prices as in the public houses !! we want limits of how much one person can buy and drink set in place !!
It makes me laugh when i hear that cannabis etc etc is what is killing our youth !! when alcohol is clearly to blame !! its seems to me the government think they are scientist as they are willing to make cannabis etc etc ridiculous classes like class b etc etc !! but alcohol isnt even in the classes, yet kills more every year than any drug !! I have worked with the unfortunate and been a youth worker !! and in all my experiences people start on alcohol before they even take a puff of a **** !! Alcohol is more addictive than most drugs !!!

The doctor was RIGHT. My son was an alcoholic and visited an organisation who told him the stark facts, get it wrong and NOT drinking can be fatal. He went through a rehab program in hospital and through their help and his determination has been drink free for two years. RIP Amy you'll always be a star!!!

Why doesn't everyone just leave the family alone. People should put themselves in their horrendous position and think long and hard how they would cope if they lost someone they loved in a similar situation situation before offering "advice" on what they think they should do!!!
